One of the interesting things about Florida is that while you mostly hear about news and events in the major cities, like Miami and Orlando, this state still has many small, quirky, off-the-beaten track places that offer a touch of “Old Florida.”
Cabbage Key is one such place. An island just off the coast of Ft. Myers, Florida, it is a lush tropical paradise spanning 100 acres.
Accessible only by boat or plane, Cabbage Key has a dock, a tiny gift shop, an inn with six guestrooms and seven rental cottages.
You won’t find any supermarkets or roads here. But it does have nature paths on which people can walk, ride bikes or drive golf carts, as long as they abide by the 5 mph speed limit.
Cabbage Key is a 100-acre tropical island near Ft. Myers, Florida.
Cabbage Key also has a restaurant that’s been serving drinks to fishermen and boaters for over seven decades. The restaurant is what attracts most people to the island these days. Its unusual décor is legendary. It has over $70,000 in $1 dollar bills, most autographed, and taped to its walls and ceiling.

The story is that a fisherman taped a dollar bill to the bar so that even if he came back broke from his next fishing trip, he would have enough money for at least one drink. That practical plan inspired other patrons to do the same, a tradition that continues to this day.
Any money that falls is donated to local charities, approximately $10,000 per year.
Celebrities have found their way to this eatery – Katherine Hepburn, Ernest Hemingway, Julia Roberts, Sean Connery and John F. Kennedy Jr., who autographed a dollar in 1997, two years before his death.
According to the restaurant’s manager about $50 to $100 in dollar bills fall off every day. That money is scooped up by restaurant staff and given to local charities. It amounts to about a $10,000 per year donation.
So by now you’re surely wondering, how this odd little eating establishment on a remote island figures into today’s featured property. Enjoy a Cheeseburger with Jimmy Buffet
I started this Property Alert by telling you about the restaurant on Cabbage Key with its tale about the fisherman and his dollar bill. But that isn’t the eatery’s only legend. The rumor is that it was the inspiration for Jimmy Buffett’s hit song “Cheeseburger in Paradise.”
I’m told Buffet frequents the island restaurant. His autographed photo and dollar bill are proudly on display, and the manager says they’re the reason the restaurant’s cheeseburger is its best seller.
