I was driving in Fort Lauderdale recently and came across something you don’t see every day – a giant statue of a woman ripping open her chest, exposing a surprising green interior made of ferns. Weird, right? The eye-catching structure is large enough to walk through it to the other side.
A little research revealed it’s a sculpture by South African artist Daniel Popper, who is known for his large-scale works, mostly for one-time use at music festivals. With no music festivals happening during Covid, Popper has had to expand his artistic endeavors.
This piece, titled “Thrive,” is a permanent installation. It weighs about 14 tons and stands over 30 feet tall. Popper said it’s meant to be “a symbol of hope and transformation.”
The sculpture is destined to become a must-see on any Instagram trail through downtown Ft. Lauderdale, which happens to be just up the road from today’s featured property. Read on for details.

Construction on 3000 Waterside is scheduled to begin in September 2022 and to be completed in early 2025. However, the condo residences can be reserved now at pre-construction prices.
They come in a variety of floor plans of one- to three-bedrooms, ranging in size from 1,490 sq. ft. to 2,731 sq. ft. There’s also a small selection of three-bedroom townhomes. Prices for the residences and townhomes range from $990,850 to $2,608,105.
