Hello, Joel Greene here from Condo Hotel Center. When I was a kid growing up on Miami Beach, there was an exclusive golf club that was minutes from my home. I passed by it dozens of times each week. But because no one in my family played golf, I never got to see beyond the front entrance. I always wondered what was beyond those walls.
Turns out, the golf course has an interesting history. Originally opened as Bayshore Golf Course in 1923 by pioneering developer Carl Fisher, it was designed to lure wealthy winter residents from New York, Indianapolis and Detroit.
In World War II, the U.S. Army rented the course for $1 a year as a training ground, and helmeted, rifle-toting soldiers ran through the course’s palm trees amid the fog from smoke grenades.
In 1944 Chicago investors moved to buy the course, planning to build 650 upscale homes. But disapproving neighbors persuaded the city to buy the land and keep the golf course.
Since then, the golf course and clubhouse have undergone many remodels. Its lakes have been drained, redesigned and refilled; hills and bunkers bulldozed and resculpted; and the old clubhouse demolished and rebuilt from scratch multiple times.
The City of Miami Beach hired Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates for the latest transformation. The result is the beautifully restored Miami Beach Golf Club, a landmark that will be enjoyed by Miami Beach residents and visitors for years to come.

Golfer’s Delight
At the beginning of this write-up I told you about the exceptional Miami Beach Golf Club literally minutes from 3900 Alton. But what’s even more amazing is that there’s a second, equally gorgeous golf course just a couple of minutes in the opposite direction.
It’s the La Gorce Country Club. It too was built in the 1920s when Miami Beach experienced its first construction boom. The land it’s on was formed by dredging more than two million cubic yards from Biscayne Bay. (As far as monumental tasks go, this was only a little bit more labor intensive than when I asked my daughter Haley to clean the clothes off of her bedroom floor.)
Over the years the course and its clubhouse have undergone many remodels. Today it features a beautiful 18-hole golf course, tennis, croquet, an Olympic-style swimming pool, a fitness center and restaurant.
